Oil Pulling – The Whys and Hows

All of us know what it is like to wake up with a dry mouth, a sore throat, and a terrible case of the dreaded morning breath. Yuck! We don’t want to shove a bunch of unneeded chemicals and other junk into our bodies to solve our bad breath problem. And, honestly, we don’t feel like brushing ten times a day either. But how can we get rid of morning breath in a way that is healthy? For that matter, how can we cure all bad breath naturally? The answer might not be what you think.

Oil. Yes, it’s as simple as that. Oil is one of the best natural products to cure bad breath. It has been used for centuries, and is a great alternative to unnatural, unhealthy breath fresheners. Using oil as a breath freshener does take some planning and consistency, but with a little grit, you can say goodbye to bad breath forever.

The method of using oil for a bad breath remedy is called oil pulling.  Here’s how it works. Take a small amount of coconut oil (think a teaspoon to begin with), and put it in your mouth. Then set the timer, and swish it around in your mouth until the timer goes off. Beginners may want to start with just a few minutes, and slowly increase the time to 20-30 minutes. Make sure that when your timer does go off, you don’t swallow the oil. Instead, spit it into the garbage can. And that’s that! Make a habit of doing it every morning, and voila! No more bad breath.

The health benefits of oil pulling go far beyond just getting rid of bad breath. As you swish the oil around in your mouth, pulling it over your tongue and through your teeth, it cleans away plaque and other gross stuff rather efficiently. What is more, it pulls toxins out of your body through the thin skin inside your mouth. Oil pulling strengthens your immune system and leaves you feeling healthy and energized throughout the day. What’s not to love about it?! Oil pulling is a great, healthy lifestyle habit to get into.
